'Ekphrasis' is an album featuring six original compositions composed as part of my postgraduate research project on musical ekphrasis. Musical ekphrasis, in short, refers to a musical transformation of a work of visual art or poetry. This project was born out of a lifelong curiosity about visual art and poetry, and a desire to combine my interests and find new ways to create music with works that inspire me. The six compositions are based on visual artworks by Bori Benko, Eveline Kotai, and Judy Chicago; and poems by Emily Dickinson, Aja Monet, and Sonia Sanchez. The album features fellow Perth-based musicians Jamie Oehlers, Allira Wilson, Harry Mitchell, Djuna Lee, and Pete Evans.
AJRB End 2024: Happy Festive Season!
Have been listening to Holli’s new album, it’s great. Also features Tal Cohen and Jamie Oehlers on it. Vanessa Perica said of the album:

New album “All Ears” just dropped. It’s fantastic. Fantastic Tunes. Killer band too. Really strong guitar directions here that are diverse, original and embracing of different styles. Super quality mix too for all you audiophiles out there! Check it out!

With the unfortunate demise of MadMimi, I’ve had to find a new newsletter service. I guess it’s an opportunity to try out a few new things. Will endeavour to keep going as normal, usually one new feature send out a month. If that’s not your bag, feel free to unsubscribe. But, this little platform is an important vehicle for amplifying new releases from local musicians, and celebrating their creative achievements despite all the challenges. So if you can, check it out, support the local creators doing amazing things, and get amongst it!

Proving that Early Jazz still sounds fresh, exciting and uplifting, Cam has released a brilliant album that has some super fun tunes on it as well as some quite awesome playing from 3 heavy hitters on the Liquorice Stick. Of course Au has a rich history in Early Jazz and it’s super encouraging to hear the flame still burns bright.

Work of the Year: Jazz was presented to Cheryl Durongpisitkul for A Pinky Promise, a provocative work reflecting on her experiences as woman of colour in the jazz community. This work was commissioned by the Monash Art Ensemble - MAE (Monash University).
I really hope that the AJRB can represent Cheryl’s fantastic work soon!
